Chloé spring/summer 2011 collection BY hannah macgibbon

An elegant demeanor, a svelte silhouette: the Chloé woman embodies a strikingly fresh, moderngracefulness. Her couture-tinged wardrobe evinces a spare refinement, the better to reflect her ethereal style, imbued

with self-assurance and controlled energy. The crêpe coats and dresses, with their precise cut, are underlined with metal details. Meticulously pleated dresses are cut from opulent, smooth-flowing jersey. The same

exacting suppleness can be found in the long tulle or chiffon skirts, sometimes worn over shorts to create an interplay of transparencies. In a more sportswear vein, satin-banded trousers and sleeveless blouses in stiff, fresh cotton are a near abstract evocation of the everyday discipline of a modern-day ballerina.

Wool and silk crêpe, organza, silk jersey, tulle, unadorned or accented with feathers and hide, and leather as fine and supple as a comfortable slipper are juxtaposed with poplins, cotton piqué and embroidered tweeds in a collection that plays up textural contrasts — matte and glossy, light and dark. The palette of skin tones, the delicate makeup-like beige and cream shades that Hannah MacGibbon favors, is enriched with rosewood and petal hues, as well as notes of amber, burnt earth and nutmeg, heightened with emerald green, lacquer red and deep garnet.

Clear shiny Plexiglas, metal and vegetable leather in natural tones or ruby red are crafted into graphic shoes with modest heels for a sleek yet nonchalant step.

Small format handbags are carried like an adornment for the hand, soft clutches with straps that wind around a slender wrist or miniature rigid cases with zipper closures. For daywear, the pared-down rectangular models cut a striking profile while remaining lightweight and supple.
